Title
Medieval or Post-Medieval Ewer Leg
Description
English: A cast copper alloy vessel leg with an integral foot, probably from an ewer. Medieval or Post-Medieval date (c. AD 1300 - c. AD 1750). Length 67.0mm, width 19.0mm and 23.0mm thick. Weight 91.44g.

There is an old break at the top of the leg where it would have joined the body of the vessel. Below this break the leg is sub-triangular in cross-section, flat at the rear. It tapers in width and thickness from the break towards the stout foot which is flat on its underside. All the surfaces except the top of the leg and the underside of the foot are covered in "file" marks which may be decorative.

The object is in good condition and is largely covered in a mid greenish/brownish patina. However, there are small patches of corrosion overall.

Lewis, Brownsword and Pitt (1987), in their paper on Medieval Bronze Tripod Ewers from Wales, in Medieval Archaeology Vol.XXXI, illustrate similar examples on page 85, Fig.2, Nos.2-5, which are dated to the 14th or early 15th century.

Margeson (1993) illustrates two similar examples on page 92, Fig.59, No.568 & 569, which are dated to c.1507 and c.1650-1750, respectively.

Ottaway and Rogers (2002) illustrate a similar example on page 2810, Fig.1394, No.14193, which is dated from the mid 15th century to the early 17th century. However, this example has a transverse rib between the leg and the foot.
