Title
Medieval or Later Lead Offcut from East Cowick
Description
English: Lead and Iron

Offcut. Cast lead sheet cut on all sides retaining the shank of a nail circa 4mm square. This object marks a staged removal of lead sheet or flashing: the first stage was to cut around nails holding the lead down so as to remove a large area of sheeting at once; the second operation entailed the recovery of the smaller nailed fragments left behind. This process is recorded from contexts dated to the 13th century, though will have remained essentially unchanged whenever it was required - roofing lead requires recasting every hundred years or so. The sheet is in this case of a heavy structural gauge. Suggested date: Medieval to Post-Medieval, 1200-1800.

Length: 34.2mm, Width: 24.7mm, Thickness: 4.9mm, Weight: 26.62gms.
