Title |
Medieval mount; strap mount in the shape of a crowned head |

Description |
English: Medieval mount; stamped sheet copper alloy mount of probable 14th or early 15th century date. The mount is in the shape of a crowned, bearded head. It has a crown with three domes, wavy hair to either side of the face and defined eyebrows, nose, almond-shaped eyes, cheekbones and lips. In style it is reminiscent of the portraits on contemporary coins. The mount has a single, small, circular rivet in the centre on the back.
Height 16.1mm, width 13.2mm, thickness (plate) 0.4mm, thickness (rivet) 3.7mm, weight 0.84g Ref: Egan and Pritchard ‘Dress Accessories: Medieval finds from excavations in London’ (pp. 162; pp. 200-201, nos. 1081-1084 for sheet copper alloy figurative mounts, albeit of different designs to this one) |
