Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Medieval miniature from an illuminated manuscript (bestiary) depicting a bonnacon, a legendary animal spraying acidic excrement at hunters etc.
  • Book illustration from De Natura animalium, ca. 1285, Bibliothèque Municipale de Douai, Ms. 711, f. 8r
  • The bonnacon (bonasus or bonacho) is a mythical creature described as a bull with inward-curving horns and a horse-like mane. Unable to defend itself with its horns, it purportedly defends itself by expelling caustic feces at its pursuers, burning them and ensuring its escape. First described by Pliny the Elder and later included in medieval bestiaries, the bonnacon's excrement was said to be highly destructive. Illustrations often depicted the creature humorously, emphasizing the comedic reactions of its victims.
