Title |
Medieval mazer mount |
||
Description |
English: Silver circular mount with several flattened bends and chips removed from the edge in three places. The front has an elaborate incised design consisting of the letters ihs within a sun disk. The letters are large and in black letter script; they are surrounded by incised diagonal lines and within a plain circular border. On the outer side of the border are two ranks of triangular rays each with two central incised lines running down the centre and converging at the point of the triangles. Each alternate triangle appears to be behind the two that flank it creating the impression of two ranks. At the outer edge of the disc is a second plain border and between this and the rays is incised cross hatching. There are no obvious means of attachment but there could have been something top and bottom where the edge has broken away. It is 42.5mm in diameter, 0.5mm thick and weighs 7.44 grams. The mount has been examined by Geoff Egan (Finds Adviser for Medieval and Post Medieval finds) who suggests it is probably from the centre of a mazer and dates to the 15th century AD. Medieval mazers (large drinking vessels with feet) often featured a central mount within the bowl. |
