Title
Medieval lyre shaped strap end
Description
English: Lower edge of a Medieval cast copper alloy lyre shaped strap end. The lower edge is a lombardic M shape with worn breaks at either end and possibly in the middle. There are three - four parallel incised lines along each side of the edge, meeting in the centre in a chevron. From the outer side of the edge projects a large terminal shaped like an oak tree with a large foliate top and a short central 'trunk' which splits into two branches with a 120 degree angle between them. There are circular loops on the upper side of the branches by their base. The branches are attached at the base to the upper corners of the "M" shaped lower edge of the frame. On the foliate part of the terminal are multiple incised lines radiating out from the 'trunk'. The reverse is flat. The object has a mid greyish-green patina. Traces of gilding survive. The length is 33.9mm, width 33.0mm, and thickness 2.6mm. It weighs 5.58 grams. This object possibly dates to the 16th - 18th century.

A very similar frame containing a central figure of St Christopher is illustrated in Ward Perkins (1940) p.270, fig 85 no.1, he dates the type to 1390-1410 AD (ibid:268). NMS-799D01 on this database is also of this type.
