Title
Medieval lyre-shaped buckle frame
Description
English: Medieval Incomplete lyre-shaped buckle frame with outside edge in the form of a pair of confronted harpies gardant, part of one side survives. The sides of the heads and the front paws of the harpies conjoin leaving an aperture between them. Their wings are folded and their back legs merge into the sides of the frame. The underside is flat apart from the rear of the two heads. Harpies were frequently employed in the decoration of metalwork in the late 12th and later (cf. Zarnecki et al. 1984, cat. no.256; Fingerlin 1971 Abb. 9, Kat. Nr. 12). Its form indicates this piece is late 14th or 15th century.
