Title |
Medieval lead papal bulla |
||
Description |
English: A lead papal bulla of Pope Innocentius V (1276). Papal bullae were used as seals on official papal documents to authenticate their provenance and authority and were often reused as religious amulets. On the obverse are the busts of St Peter and St Paul, each within a beaded border. Above the busts is the inscription SPASPE, abbreviations for St Paul and St Peter. The reverse has the inscription of the pope INNO/CENTIVS/PP V. 'PP' is an abbreviation for pastor pastorum, which translates as 'shepherd of the shepherds'. There is an omega above the letters PP. The edges of the bull have sustained considerable damage and there is a hole in the centre for the attachment cord that has been drilled from both sides. |
