Medieval lead papal bulla |
||
Description |
English: Incomplete cast circular lead seal with a design on either face, in a very worn condition. The seal, or 'papal bulla' is of Pope Nicholas III (1277-80). The obverse depicts the bust of St Paul within an inverted pear shaped compartment defined by pellets. St Paul's beard is portrayed as being long, straight and pointed, whilst his hair is straight and swept back. At the top of the bulla in the centre are the near-illegible letters 'SPA[SPE]', abbreviations for St Paul and St Peter.
The reverse of the bulla has the following letters over three lines. [NI]CO/[LAVS/PP.I]II.. The PP means 'pastor pastorum', translated as 'shepherd of the shepherds'. Both obverse and reverse faces have a pelleted perimeter. The seal is broken along the internal hole created for the attachment of the chord. |
