Title |
Medieval key for turning a peg or tap |
||
Description |
English: Medieval cast copper alloy key for turning a peg or tap with a rectangular end. The key has a flat double looped bow, 27.7mm wide and 3.1mm thick. The bow has projecting lobed knops at the corners and a flat, round ended knop projecting from the centre between the loops, pierced with a small hole for suspension. The central hole of each loop is slightly quatrefoil in shape with square inward projections at the corners. Below the bow the key thickens to the integral rectangular sectioned shaft which projects from between the loops, opposite the suspension loop. At the top is a triple collar, the central collar wider than the others. Below this the shaft expands in width and thickness evenly to the lower edge, from 6.5mm by 7.5mm to 8.0mm by 10.6mm. The lower edge is complete with a slight thickening at the rim. The shaft is hollow with the hole extending to at least 10.2mm in depth. It is 50.3mm in total length and weighs 13.29 grams.
Similar keys with various designs of bows but similar expanding hollow shanks are illustrated by Egan (1998:244) no. 747 and 748, the former from a later 14th century context.. SUR-C7FCD8 on this database from surrey is identical. They differ from other keys with hollow ended bows to fit on iron shanks in the degree to which the shank widens to wards the end. Egan (ibid) suggest they may be used with tuning pegs on musical instruments or on spigots or taps. |
