Title
Medieval jetton
Description
English: A copper alloy jetton of Mathilda de Gueldre of the Duchy of Guelders (1371 - 1379). It is very similar to Mitchiner number 790 and 791 on page 252 of Jetons, Medalets and Tokens, Volume One, but the reverse border is different. This jetton design is very similar to English jetton designs and Mitchiner notes that both the examples he lists have an English Provenance. He speculates that there may have been commercial links between the two states because Mathilde's grandfather was King Edward III of England.
