Title
Medieval iconographic finger ring (detail)
Description
English: Silver gilt finger-ring of iconographic type. The bezel has a central ridge with two facets either side of it which contain a depiction of the Virgin Mary on the right and a saint on the left. Saints were portrayed upon jewellery not only as images of devotion but also as semi-magical protectors. It is hard to be sure which saint this is, as the gilding has worn away and the silver has corroded. The outside of the hoop is incised with oblique lines to give the impression that the hoop is twisted. The twists on the shoulders of the hoop, either side of the bezel, are engraved with three five-petalled flowers on one side and four on the other side. The five-petalled flower is a recognised reference to the five wounds of Christ and the group of seven may be an allusion to the seven sorrows of the Virgin Mary. Late 15th century.

For comparisons see 2004 T14 from Old Romney, Kent (Treasure Annual Report 2004, fig 200, pp.108), 2005 T175 from Durnford, Wiltshire (Treasure Annual Report 2005/6, fig426, pp. 119) and 2005 T424 from Bexhill, East Sussex (Treasure Annual Report 2005/6, fig434, pp. 120).
