Title
Medieval heraldic harness pendant
Description
English: A copper-alloy heraldic harness pendant of Medieval date. The pendant is circular in from with an integrally cast suspension loop at the top, which is oval in form, set at right angles to the plane of the plate and with a small circular aperture. The front face of the pendant crries enamelled and gilded heraldic motifs. These comprises a central gilded lion rampant(?) on a shield shaped red enamelled background, surrounded by blue enamel. Traces of gilding are visible on the suspension loop and the top edges of the plate. The heraldry may be interpreted as Gules, a lion rampant or, on a background azure. A close parallel for the blazon has not been identified, although it shares similarities with an example recorded from Norfolk (NMS-449B54), which might suggest it is allusive to the arms of England and France. This pendant measures 28.75mm in length, 19.63mm in width/diameter, 1.68mm in thickness and 3.36g in weight.

This is a heraldic harness pendant of Medieval date. It is likely to date to between the 13th and 14th centuries AD, but a close identification of the blazon may potentially enable this range to be narrowed slightly.
