Title |
Medieval harness pendant |
||
Description |
English: A medieval (c. AD 1200-1400) copper alloy, enamelled, lozenge-shaped horse harness pendant, depicting a Wyvern or Dragon with outstretched bat-wings and gaping mouth. There are traces of gilding on the frame and the body of the creature. There is a 3 mm wide border which forms a recessed field to house red enamel, areas of which survive. The suspension loop is at 90 degrees to the frame and extends for 8.7 mm. The suspension perforation is neat and circular, 3.7 mm diameter and appears drilled. The upper part of the frame, towards the suspension loop, is bent backward through approximately 45 degrees.
The reverse is corroded and undecorated, with patches of green patina. Griffiths, (1995, The Medieval Horse and its Equipment) suggests that enamelled horse pendants date to the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. Overall length 52.2 mm, width 38.8 mm, thickness 2.3 mm, weight17.6 |
