Title
Medieval gaming piece
Description
English: A cast copper-alloy object, perhaps a gaming piece or a weight. The object is thick, flat and circular, with a raised rim and rounded edges. The upper face of the object is decorated in moulded relief with a stag advancing left. The rear of the object is undecorated and flat. The object has a mid-green patina. It measures 41.06 mm in diameter and is 8.02 mm thick; it weighs 80.2g (1237.7 grains, 2.82 oz).

Close parallels can be found for this object among a group of four Irish copper-alloy discs also decorated with animals of the chase, including a stag, a hare and dogs, published by Roe (1945). Roe interpreted them as gaming pieces (tablesmen). Mark Hall (Perth Museum and Art Gallery) advises that they have since been reinterpreted as weights, but the weight of this example does not obviously conform to any medieval standard. They may perhaps date to the 12th to 14th centuries.
