English: Incomplete worn and corroded copper alloy gable mount from the ridge of a hipped lid of a box or casket, in the form of a segmented D-sectioned bar with a groved sub-rectangular central projection, both ends broken across perforation in flattened terminal. Surviving length 64mm. Height 12mm. Width 6-7mm. Cf. related types from Winchester (Hinton 1990 in Biddle, fig.221, no.2363), and Salle, Norfolk (Ashley forthcoming 'Anglo-Norman Elite Objects from Castle and Countyside' in J. Davies and A. Riley (eds.) Castles in the Anglo-Norman World, Fig.1, no. 5., NHER 34990), both surmounted by a large trefoil or fleur-de-lis. 12th century. |
