Title
Medieval folding candle holder
Description
English: A damaged and incomplete copper-alloy folding candleholder of probable 14th century AD date.

The candle would have been held within the sheet metal cup at the top, which would originally have been an inverted cone, but is now badly bent. The stem is attached to the back of the cup by a rivet and consists of a folded sub-rectangular plate. The uppermost side of this plate has three incised horizontal lines as decoration and a vertical slot at the bottom, into which the now-missing spike would have fitted. This spike could have been folded back when the object was not in use and held in place by a sheet metal plate, part of which remains at the point where the triangular top of the stem adjoins the cup.

Overall, the object measures 61.3mm long by 24mm wide and 10.4mm thick. It weighs 8.90g.
