Title |
Medieval ear scoop |
||
Description |
English: Medieval cosmetic tool; cast copper alloy ear scoop of 14th century date. The implement is of a band of copper alloy, approximately circular in cross-section and twisted along the length of its middle section, presumably for decorative purposes. It is then flattened at both ends. One end is complete, and has been dished to form a tiny spoon bowl, probably for use as an ear scoop. The other end is flat and expands but has been broken off so its precise form cannot now be seen. It is quite common for these items to have a pointed nail cleaner at the other end from the ear scoop but the break makes it impossible to be certain of that in this instance.
Length (folded) 49.3mm, width (folded) 32.5mm, estimated length if straightened 115mm, thickness 2.5mm, weight 3.80g Ref: See Egan’s “Dress Accessories”, pages 378 – 380, especially items 1758-1760. |
