Title
Medieval copper alloy spout
Description
English: Cast copper alloy zoomorphic spout dating to the late Medieval period. The spout is from a vessel, either a ewer or a laver (15th - early 16th century). The object is a tubular spout, cast in the form of a dog's head with open mouth and the spout protrudes from the open mouth. It has a downwardly curved, long, pointed neck. The head has a flat-topped nose, prominent brow, and oval ears which protrude slightly above the head. The neck is oval in cross-section. The object has a dark brown patina.

See J.M. Lewis "Bronze Aquamaniles and Ewers" (1987, Finds Research Group Datasheet 7, pp4-5, fig 8a) for a similar spout on a pedestal-base ewer from CardiffCastle moat, dated to the 15th century. Mills "Medieval Artefacts" (1999, p.110, NM.292) publishes another similar spout, noting they are from priest's washing bowls (lavers), and dating them to the 15th century.
