Title
Medieval copper alloy pouring spout (side)
Description
English: Complete cast copper alloy pouring spout in the shape of a dog’s head. Length 66mm and 15mm wide. Weight 46.73g. The dog’s head is hollow and oval in cross-section and holds a circular-shaped object (6mm internal diameter) in its mouth from which liquid would have been poured. The dog has large upturned and round-ended ears which project slightly above the head. The eyes are absent. The top of the neck, to the rear of the ears, is concave as viewed from the side and the neck merges into the downward curving attachment end which is at an angle of about 45 degrees to the head and neck of the dog. Patches of a dark green patina survive mainly on the upper surfaces of the spout. This pouring spout and others like it were used in the 15th and 16th centuries and it is believed that they were used as pourers on leather bottles, secured to them by a leather strap so that only the head and neck of the dog would have been visible, similar spouts can seen in Bailey 1997, 57-59.
