Medieval copper alloy barrel padlock
Description
English: Medieval copper alloy barrel padlock, 42mm long, 33mm wide and 14mm thick with a weight of 21.26grams. The object is zoomorphic representing a horse and is broadly rectangular in form and circular in cross section. It has a stocky cylindrical body with short circular sectioned legs positioned in each corner. It has decoration on its body representing a saddle, formed of a raised oval motif, with two raised 'straps' running down the horses sides. It has a circular sectioned neck with a stylised triangular head. The head has triangular ears protruding from each upper corner and its neck is incised with with parallel lines representing a mane.There is a circular depression in the centre of teh face, which may have held the padlocks bar in place. It has a rectangular hole in its front, under the head, which has two short triangular projections in the centre of its upper and lower sides. It has a rectangular recess in its rear which contains two D shaped holes arranged back to back, forming a straight transverse bar.

The object is very similar to SF-67C2E5Z which is adted to the 13th - 15th Centuries. For a more complete example see LANCUM-CB2F97 which has the locking device.
