Description |
English: A hoard of 10 Early Post-Medieval silver groats, deposited after 1526 and before 1544.
I have examined a group of coins reported found at Longbridge Deverill, Wiltshire. Eight of the coins are English silver groats, struck to the sterling fineness of over 90% silver. The remaining two coins are double patards of Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgundy, officially current in England as equivalent to groats and found here widely. They had a fineness of a little over 80% silver and were generally heavier than the English groats. They are effectively the same denomination, to a total face value of the ten coins of 3 shillings and fourpence. These 10 coins are therefore of good silver and were in currency together in the early decades of the 16th century, before the onset of Henry VIII's Great Debasement in 1544. The presence of a single denomination indicates a degree of selection. It is my opinion that this find fulfils the criteria of Treasure according to the terms of the Act.
