Title |
Medieval coin: Double struck Henry III penny |
||
Description |
English: A complete silver penny of Henry III (AD 1216-1272). The coin has been double, or over struck on both faces making the legend on both faces hard to read at first glance. The obverse has been overstruck so the crown is at 10 o'clock, the obverse is harder to decipher; The moneyer is probably WIL[LEM] and the mint WINC (for Winchester). This would make the coin either a Class 2a or 3a-3c. Judging by the curls on the king's head, Class 2a seems unlikely. There do not appear to be any pellets to the sides of the head, and the X is quite ornate, therefore this could be a Class 3ab issue, which dates from AD 1248-1250. North 986/1. |
