Title
Medieval circular mount
Description
English: Medieval copper alloy composite circular mount, probably from the centre of the base of a bowl or mazer (drinking vessel). A circular (diameter 34-36mm) openwork plaque with slightly convex surface shows the winged lion of St Mark, the wings forming parts of the border, the lion standing on another part with an engraved inscription. This is in illegible, and probably garbled. The lion's mane and his far rear leg are picked out with engraved lines. His tail is curled forward between his legs. The plaque is attached somewhat asymmetrically with an integral rivet to a flat circular (diameter 39mm) plate decorated on the reverse with an engraved quatrefoil. Overall thickness 6.5mm. The space between the two parts is <1mm, suggesting a sheet metal rather than wooden vessel. 14th - 15th century.
