Title
Medieval candlestick (profile).
Description
English: A cast copper alloy candlestick socket. The socket is tubular, circular in section, and has straight sides. The upper rim is abraded. The exterior of the socket is decorated with fine horizontal ridges; a pair in the centre, one below the rim and a ridge at the base. Protruding and integral to the base of the socket is further moulding and the stem. The base of the interior is an inverted hollow conical with waisted sides. At the tip there is a circular sectioned platform, which is the stem, and it has an integral collar above. The surface of the socket has an under developed mid to dark green patina. Some abrasion has taken place. The socket measures 43.61mm tall, and 20.66mm diameter. It weighs 26.3g.

The socket is from a Bunsen type (Brownsword, R. 1985 English Latten Candlesticks 1400-1700 Finds Research Group Datasheet 1, Figure 4). This is a separate socket, not integral to the stem, and therefore tends to date to the late 15th and early 16th centuries (ibid).
