Title
Medieval candlestick (probably)
Description
English: A cast copper-alloy fragment probably from a medieval candlestick. The piece is broadly U-shaped, with one end terminating in a spike and the other in an outward facing bifurcation.  The split end is defined by a triangular removal uppermost.  The pointed end has been bent to one side as a result of old damage.  The artefact is faceted, with a lozengiform cross-section.  At the base of the 'U' are two broken projections, one at each end, both with the same cross-section.  They are both truncated after extending for c. 6mm.  The identification of a candlestick is by comparison with a piece illustrated in Ward Perkins (1940, 179; ref. 56.1); cf. also SUSS-5E2F87 on this database.  The published object too has a bifurcated extension and a spike, alongside a sleeve, although not of the same form.  This fragment has a dark-grey patina where it survives and is lightly pitted in places.
