Title
Medieval candlestick
Description
English: An incomplete cast copper alloy candle stick dating from the late Medieval to early Post-Medieval period. The object is one branch of a double-socket candlestick. The opposite branch and the cylindrical collar are missing. The cylindrical collar would have been attached to the candlestick between stem and spike/pricket. The arm is lozenge shaped in cross-section. It extends diagonally upwards from the break to a sharp shoulder, curving upwards and inwards before extending back outwards again towards looped terminal which would have been horizontal. The looped terminal is circular in plan and rectangular in cross-section. The terminal would have held in place a separately cast socket to accommodate the candle. The break at the base of the arm is old, ragged, and irregular. The object has a dark brown patina.

The object can be classified as Brownsword's 'Branched double-socket type' candlesticks (Brownsword, 1985: Fig. 3) and probably dates to the late-15th to early-16th centuries AD. A more complete example which can be found on the database is SF-EC21B2.
