Title
Medieval candlestick
Description
English: Probably a fragment of a medieval candlestick; the collar in which the candle stood is the only surviving part. It is a thick and chunky ring of copper alloy which tapers. At the narrower end (15.3 x 13.5mm opening) there are broken rectangular projections to both sides. The narrower end of the collar is sub octagonal in plan, and the upper wider end is sub circular.

Compare figure 426 in Medieval Households which is topped by a tapering collar of the same size and shape as this example, also with a projection to each side. It dates from 1350 - 1400.

This example was found on Towton Battlefield which may suggest a date of 1461.
