Medieval candlestick
Description
English: Part of a Medieval tinned copper alloy(or with high tin content) candlestick, separate base missing, hollow octagonally facetted stem with double collar at both ends and two small perforations (casting faults), with an openwork socket at the upper end with two flat sectioned sides flanking a vertical slot to aid the extraction of the candle, octagonally-facetted collar at the apex with two opposed horizontal forked projections (one damaged). Width of collar 19mm. Width including projections 33mm. Height 101mm. Cf. two French examples illustrated in London Museum Medieval Catalogue plate XXXIX, Top on right and Bottom left (upper right of three examples), and discussion on pages 181-2. 14th century.
