Title |
Medieval bulla |
||
Description |
English: A complete, medieval, lead papal bulla of Pope Alexander IV, whose papacy lasted from c. AD 1254-1261.
The bulla is a cast lead or lead alloy round seal which has decoration on both faces. The reverse depicts the faces of St Peter and St Paul below the inscription SPASPE (SPA = Sanctus Paulus, SPE = Sanctus Petrus), with a cross between the faces. St. Paul is seen on the left looking right, with a long pointed beard, and St. Peter is on the right facing left, with a rounded face and beard and hair formed from pellets. The faces are surrounded by an intermittent beaded border which also runs around the outside edge of the bulla. The obverse bears the legend ALE/XANDER/.PP.IIII within a beaded border. There is an omega symbol above the 'PP', which is an abbreviation of pastor pastorum - meaning 'shepherd of the shepherds'. There is evidence of the cord holes, through which the bulla would have been attached to the document, at the top and bottom edge of the seal. The die axis is 12 o'clock. The bulla measures 38.1mm in diameter, 4.5mm thick, and weighs 41.8g. |
