Title
Medieval bulla
Description
English: Lead papal bulla of Gregory IX (1227-41). The bull is worn but the surface condition remains clear and the obverse inscription remains clear with the legend GRE/GORIVS/.PP.VIIII·. The reverse is of the normal design for papal seals with the heads of SS Paul and Peter within pelleted aureoles. The reverse is more worn than the obverse and has a horizontal line positioned immediately beneath (and appearing to underscore) the SPE SPE legend. The bull is typical for those of Gregory IX in having an edge to the flan extending beyond the pelleted outer border on both the obverse and reverse. The bull has been sealed with the obverse at 356° to the reverse.

The principal interest of the bull is that it has been pierced at the centre of the top, as though for suspension from a cord; the hole is very close to the edge and to the bulla's central cord-line, and would appear to be more closely centred and aligned with the top of the reverse design than that of the obverse, suggesting that this may have been the side intended to be seen or facing out.

Weight 47.491g. Height 41mm. Width 36mm. Thickness 5.5mm.
