Title
medieval bulla
Description
English: Half of a cast lead alloy papal bulla probably of Nicholas III (1277 - 1280), IV (1288 - 1292) or V (1447 - 1455). Half of the normal design of Sts Paul and Peter are visible on the obverse, and the legend in three lines is on the reverse: "N[ICO] / (L)[AVS] / P[P...]". Part of the slot through the centre or the bulla, through which the cord attaching it to the document would have passed, is visible. Nick Griffiths comments "There is some evidence that bullae were kept as souvenirs once the document had been removed, perhaps to use the Papal name as a good luck charm, a bit like pilgrim souvenirs".
