Title
Medieval bulla: Papal bulla of Alexander VI
Description
English: A lead alloy papal bulla of Pope Alexander VI (AD 1492-1503). The bulla is sub-circular in plan and has a slight dent on the obverse, that is not carried onto the reverse. The obverse has the busts of Saint Paul and Saint Peter facing each other within a beaded border. Above the two heads are the letters SPASPE, abbreviations of the saints' names. The reverse names the pope over three lines; ALEX/ANDER/PP VI, again within a beaded border. Bullae were used as offical seals or items of authentication in transit with documents from Rome.
