Medieval bull (papal seal) of Pope Innocent IV.
Description
English: Medieval papal bulla (seal for a papal document or 'bulla') of Pope Innocent IV (1243-54). Sub-circular lead seal with a linear opening running the length of its diameter, the ends of which are visible on the reverse, to take the chord that tied the document. The obverse bears the inscription INNO/CENTIVS./PP.IIII. within a beaded border. The reverse bears the heads of St Paul & St Peter each within a beaded border, with the letters SPA SPE above, all within a beaded border. Line of modern damage on the obverse, also on the face of St Peter. Diameter c.35.5-39.0mm, thickness c.4.5mm, weight 41.70g.
