Title
Medieval bull
Description
English: Lead papal bulla (seal) of Pope John XXI (reigned 1276-7). The obverse reads IO / HANNES / PP. XXI within a beaded border; the reverse is rather corroded, but has the faces of St Paul (with beard made up of vertical lines) and St Peter (with beard made up of pellets), both within beaded borders, with lettering which would have read SPA SPE above, all within a beaded border. There is a line down the centre of the obverse, and a fainter line down the centre of the reverse, marking the hole down the centre through which the cords of the document would have passed. Bullae were used on all papal documents, which could include indulgences and land grants.
