Title
Medieval buckle with decorated and gilt buckle plate
Description
English: Medieval buckle; cast copper alloy D-shaped buckle with decorated buckle plate, of probable late 12th or 13th century date. The buckle frame is very thin and worn, with a simple D-shaped loop and off-set pin bar. The buckle frame is formed of a single sheet of copper alloy folded around the pin bar, with two small circular rivet holes at the end of the plate. The front of the plate is decorated with a moulded design with a circle in the centre from which radiating lines reach out to a border line which follows the shape of the buckle plate, including curling around the rivet holes. The plate is rather worn and much of the original surface is missing but there are traces of gilding on the front. Total length 42.7mm, length of plate 31.8mm, width 21.7mm, thickness 1.4mm, thickness of plate 4.3mm, weight 9.43g
