Title
Medieval buckle spacer
Description
English: Medieval buckle; spacer from a single loop, oval buckle with composite plate. This buckle probably dates from the period c.1350-1450. The frame has an oval, lipped frame with a notch at the apex to receive the pin. It is integrally cast with a short, forked spacer which would have been sandwiched between the two sheets of the buckle plate. The pin is still present. It is formed of a simple, flat strip of copper alloy which tapers to a the point. The patina of the pin is a much brighter green than that of the spacer, suggesting that it is made of an alloy with a higher copper content than the spacer.

Length 24.3mm, width 19.0mm, thickness 5.8mm, weight: 4.26g

Ref: see the similar spacers illustrated on page 36 of Whitehead.
