Medieval buckle plate |

Description |
English: Medieval buckle plate; Cast copper alloy mount of probable 14th century date. This could be a strap mount but is probably an integral buckle plate which has broken away from its buckle frame. The fitting is in the form of a long, narrow strip of metal with a concave back face, giving a humped cross-section. The terminal is of a tri-lobed shape, which narrows and then flares again to a broad, horizontal collar. Below the collar the plate is cast with a central ridge running along its length and is decorated symmetrically with a pair of indented dots, then a pair of triangles pointing to towards the central ridge. Below this there are four incised lines, another pair of dots and a final horizontal ridge. The plate is broken away just beyond the final transverse ridge, indicating that it was originally attached to a larger object, probably a buckle frame. There is a single small, circular rivet hole in the centre of the terminal with a small fixing pin still in place. Much of the surface of the metal has indications of copper oxide corrosion in that it is a red-brown colour. There is also a small amount of bright green corrosion at the broken end of the buckle plate.
Length 46.6mm, width 13.9mm, thickness 4.2mm, weight 6.54g Ref: Compare Whitehead, pages 34 and 35, buckles 200, 205 and 206 for buckles with integral plates of similar design. Benet, page 454, buckle M12-0201 also has some similarities |
