Title |
Medieval buckle pin (probably) |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete cast copper-alloy pin now independent of its frame, probably from a medieval annular buckle. It is solidly cast, with a cross-section in the shape of a square with rounded corners. The loop is missing. There is a rectangular ridge (grip) at the end of the loop and the shaft. The grip is decorated with three transverse grooves (creating four unequal ridges). The pin tapers to a tip with a cutaway on the lower face. The object now has a dull, dark grey patina with corrosion all over. The three non-visible faces all feature file marks. The size of this object points to this being an example of a buckle pin as opposed to a brooch pin. There is an example illustrated in Egan and Pritchard (1991, 115; ref. 547) with similar grip and cutaway tip dating to around the 14th century AD. |
