Title
Medieval buckle pin
Description
English: A cast copper-alloy pin of Medieval date (c. 1250 - c. 1400), with a broken oval loop at one end, which has become detached from an annular buckle or possibly brooch. The pin is rectangular in cross-section with a rounded top and bottom and narrows slightly throughout its length from the loop towards the tip. The tip has been bent upwards. On the top of the shaft, near the junction with the loop there is a raised moulding (rectangular in plan) consiting of two transverse raised lines. The loop is incomplete with just over 50% remaining. The pin is 45.1mm long including the loop, 8.9mm wide and 3.5mm thick; it weighs 3.4 grams. The size suggests this is a buckle pin rather than a brooch pin. Similar buckle pins with slight variations in the raised moulding from archaeological excavations in London come from contexts dated c.1250-1400 (Egan and Pritchard 1991, 115-116, fig. 75, refs. 541, 547 and 549).
