Title
Medieval buckle pin
Description
English: A complete cast copper alloy pin of Medieval date (c. 1250 - c. 1400), with a broken oval loop at one end, which has become detached from an annular buckle or possibly brooch. The pin is rectangular in section with a rounded top and narrows slightly throughout its length from the loop towards the tip. There is a curved undercut on the underside of the tip, thinning it. On the top of the shaft, near the junction with the loop there is a raised moulding (rectangular in plan) with two transverse raised lines flanking a wider raised section with grooves between. The loop is incomplete with only about 50% remaining. The pin is 47.2mm long including the loop, 10.6mm wide and 4.8mm thick; it weighs 4.83 grams. The size suggests this is a buckle pin rather than a brooch pin. Similar buckle pins with slight variations in the raised moulding from archaeological excavations in London come from contexts dated c.1250-1400 (Egan and Pritchard 1991, 115-116, fig. 75, refs. 541, 547 and 549).
