Title |
Medieval buckle brooch; annular buckle with decorated pin |
||
Description |
English: Medieval buckle brooch; cast copper alloy annular brooch of late 13th or 14th century date. The buckle has a simple ring frame of circular cross section with a sturdy cast pin looped around one side of the frame. The frame seems surprisingly narrow when compared to the very chunky pin. The pin is a flat strip of copper alloy which tapers towards its rounded end. It has a thicker, raised square area about halfway along its length which is decorated with five stamped annulets.
Length (pin) 49.2mm, width (pin) 7.3mm, thickness (pin) 3.9mm, width (frame) 3.6mm, thickness (frame) 2.7mm, weight 15.92g Refs: See brooch 179 on page 382 (figure 241) of Hattatt, which is almost identical but with a sturdier frame. Whitehead page 17 has buckles of similar style, as does Egan, pages 57 & 58. |
