Title
Medieval buckle (plan, profile and plan).
Description
English: A cast copper alloy double loop asymmetrical buckle. It consists of one larger D-shaped loop with a small rectangular second loop whose outer edge is missing, and the breaks appear to be recent breaks. The outer edge of the larger loop is decorated with a zoomorphic moulding in the shape of a dog's head. The long ears are laid back along the sides of the frame. There are eye brows forming a '\ /' groove, with a narrowing along the muzzle and snout. The eyes are moulded lentiods. The nose and mouth are formed as notches on the underside. The buckle has a dark grey patina. It is 17.52mm long, 15.72mm wide and 6.96mm thick. It weighs 2.2gm.

This artefact is similar to a group of buckles from Meols (Griffiths, D. Et al 2007 Meols: The Archaeology of the North Wirral Coast Oxford University School of Archaeology: Monograph 68) with similar decoration (No. 637 etc.). It is not certain that they are buckles as none has yet been found with a pin and they may be a form of strap loop. Similar buckles/strap loops have been recorded by the PAS, see for example, BERK-F8A072, SWYOR-CF7E91 and SWYOR-3CBD88. The buckle date to the 14th century.
