Title
Medieval buckle
Description
English: An incomplete cast copper alloy single loop buckle with integrated plate, possibly a spur buckle, dating to the Medieval period, c. AD 1250-1400.

The buckle is approximately lozenge shaped in plan and flattened in cross section. The loop is oval, with the outside edge extended into a point. An integral plate extends from the opposite edge, tapering slightly before ending with a worn break. The plate is decorated on the front face with three moulded transverse ribs, which extend in pointed knops to the top and bottom of the plate. The plate has two circular holes, one of which still retains a copper alloy rivet. The one closest to the buckle loop is empty, and is likely to have held the pin. The reverse of the object is plain and undecorated.

The object is dark grey in colour, with small areas of green patina.

This item is similar to several other objects on the database, particularly HESH-29E60F, SUR-11241F, PUBLIC-DF26E3, and to examples depicted in Egan and Pritchard (1991:78-9), fig.48, which are interpreted as possible spur buckles.

Measurements: length: 22.16mm, width: 17.25mm, thickness: 4.01mm, weight: 2.47 g.
