Title
Medieval buckle
Description
English: A complete medieval copper alloy annular buckle dating to c. 1300-1400.

The object has a large circular frame with an oval section and with no constriction for the pin. The inside of the frame shows numerous short diagonal grooves. The pin, which is oval in section, is looped around the frame but does not close to form a full circle. The pin has a transverse collar immediately after the loop, after which it tapers to a blunt point.

The buckle is a dark grey colour, with a light green patina.

Several similar items have been recorded on the database, for example HAMP-208D4A, SUSS-9C4D88, LVPL-9697AF, and DEV-FCC652, which was found very close to this object.

Egan & Pritchard (1991: 57) noted the difficulty of distinguishing plain annular brooches from buckles and decided to use the presence of a pin constriction on the frame to identify a brooch, for which reason this example has been categorised as a buckle.

Measurements: diameter: 43.62mm, thickness (of frame): 4.46mm, thickness (of pin loop): 11.7mm, length (of pin): 46.77mm, weight: 23.00 g.
