Title
Medieval buckle
Description
English: A copper alloy buckle plate or fitting of medieval date, c. AD 1350-1550. The object is a slightly convex rectangular sheet (0.8mm thick). A 1.2mm wide border surrounds a panel decorated with a row of tall (19mm) black letter characters. The space between and around the characters is infilled with a hatching pattern. 1.2 mm diameter holes are neatly drilled and countersunk in each corner, two still contain rivets. The back of the plate is undecorated. The object is in good condition and shows little sign of wear.

The characters resemble Gothic / Textura Script but are difficult to read; one may be mis-shapen, possibly due to a casting fault. A possible interpretation is I N U or V, the U has a strikethrough or hairline stroke through one corner which appears deliberate.

Robust buckles and strap-ends bearing incised letters were probably produced in the period covering the late 14th to late 15th/early 16th centuries (Geake, 2001: 32). There are examples on this database, but in comparison this object seems of better quality, cf. DOR-02F21E, IOW-366B54.

Length 38.4mm, width 26.3mm, thickness 0.8mm, weight 8.6g.
