Title
Medieval buckle
Description
English: A copper alloy buckle of medieval date, c. AD 1250-1400.

Part of the buckle frame survives, but the pin and offset bar are now missing. The buckle is single looped, and oval in plan, with the outer part of the frame thickened, forming a crescent shape. In cross section this thickened area is trapezoidal in shape, with the inner edge markedly sloping inwards creating a distinctive effect. The result of this is that the underside of the frame is almost flattened, while the upper surface is an angled convex trapezoid shape. This angled inner slope continues around the curve of the frame, giving the pointed ends an almost rectilinear, pointed appearance. One of these is broken, but the other appears to have a decorative globular yet pointed knop at the terminal of this part of the frame. The pin rest is just visible on the outer, thicker area of the frame, in the centre of the thickened area. It is slightly misshapen due to post depositional damage.

Egan and Pritchard (1991: 70) no. 277 is similar, see also Moels (Griffiths, Philpott and Egan 2007: 88) no. 477. Both sources date this form of buckle to the late 13th to early 14th century.

Measurements: 21.5mm length, 17.9mm width, 5.2mm thick, weight 4.45g.
