Title
Medieval buckle
Description
English: An incomplete clasp dating to c. AD 1270 - 1350, missing its pin. The clasp has a rectangular frame, with the frame bowing out on both sides. The outer frame is slightly recessed, and is oval in cross section. The inner edge is bevelled. The outer corners each have a triangular knop protruding, and a raised collar running underneath. The frame narrows where it meets the buckle plate, there is a raised ridge either side of the bar. The buckle plate is a sheet of copper alloy folded over the pin bar. It is rectangular, on one side it narrows towards the attachment end and is shorter than the other side, there is a circular hole which is broken on one edge. This hole is mirrored on the other side and contains corrosion. The clasp has a dark green patina, and measures 35.6mm in length, 14.3mm in width, and weighs 2.44g. The buckle is similar to Egan and Pritchard 1991, page 118, number 552.
