Title
Medieval buckle; gilt buckle plate with possible zoomorphic decoration
Description
English: Medieval buckle plate; cast copper alloy buckle plate of probable late 12th - early 14th century date. The plate has a broad, arched panel with an openwork trilobe extending from the top of the arch. The base of the arch extends into two strips which would have rolled around the pin bar of the buckle frame. The plate is gilt on the front and much of the gilding survives. It is decorated with a line of punched, elongated dots around the arched panel. There are also incised lines along the line of the two lower lobes with an indication of debased animal heads, possibly horses, at the point where the lobes meet the arched panel. The reverse is undecorated. The plate has two circular rivet holes near the centre of the arched panel, one of which retains its copper alloy rivet. Length 32.3mm, width 25.6mm, thickness 1.6mm, catch thickness 4.6mm, weight 4.77g
