Title
Medieval brooch or buckle pin
Description
English: Treasure case: 2012 T769, disclaimed, returned to finder.

Description: A silver brooch or buckle pin, probably medieval in date. The pin is mostly rectangular apart from narrowing to a point at one end and at the other it widens slightly with projecting flanges before ending in a loop. The loop is formed of a rectangular piece now bent over 180 degrees with a straight end. In profile the pin is mostly flat with a concave section before the loop. In section the pin is flat with rounded edges.

Dimensions: The pin is 38.8mm long, 6.1mm wide, 1.1mm thick and weighs 1.46g.

Discussion: This is a pin from either a brooch or a buckle. Similar examples are 2012 T366 (KENT-B75057) and 2012 T454 (SWYOR-3A94C4), in common with fig. 1337 (Egan and Pritchard 1991, 254). This pin is broadly similar to the three examples mentioned although they have thickened collars rather than simple projecting flanges. Similar pins for brooches and buckles were made in silver throughout the medieval period therefore only a broad date (AD 1150 - 1450) can be assigned.

Consequently, in terms of age and as the object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.
